Products that contain more water than oil requiere effective preservation

Products that have a cleasing action or foaming qualities requiere surfactants
Both are difficult to achieve using only natural ingredients.
A study by the Herb Research Foundation (USA) found that up to 60 percent of substance applied to our skin is absorbed. Another study found that the average woman directly applies more than 200 chemicals to her skin via personal care products each day with the skin soaking around 2kg of chemicals a year.
When you apply a product that contains liquid paraffin or petroleum jelly for instance, it will remain on top of the skin. Not penetrating the skin at all, instead, wrapping a layer of this substance on the skin's surface, thus altering skin function (preventing moisture loss and natural exchange of gases).
Many small and permeable substances will be absorbed and taken up by your skin cells and processed, to be released into your circulation later. EG Vit C, Vit E.
Larger an non-penetrable substances are absorbed and occupy the spaces between your skin cells and after a while will be excreted by your body.
Or larger and non-penetrable substances are absorbed by your glands, like reservoirs and released over time into your bloodstream.
Consumers are becoming increansingly concerned about the combined and cumulative effect of these chemicals. Consumers are turning to natural personal care products as they wish to avoid synthetic chemicals."
